This is Guillaume’s 1000whp Lexus IS300 journey
This story all started a little bit more than 5 years ago when Guillaume wanted to buy a new reliable, clean, rwd and fun daily driver for himself. The Lexus IS 300 was the perfect choice. At that time, a clean Lexus IS300s were already pretty rare, especially here in Quebec Canada, but one day the unicorn poped off on local adds!
It was unbelievable; immaculate condition, 40 000km, never winter driven, always garage kept and only one owner!
Few days later Guillaume took possession of it and started to use it as a daily driver.
The first year of Guillaume's Lexus IS300
A year went by and he kept it in pristine condition. In Guillaume’s opinion, the car was just too clean not to do anything with it. At this moment we began to talk about swapping it for a small block chevy or a 2jz gte. Ideas went by and we went with the 2jz gte vvti plateform paired with a manual swap. The main idea behind this car was really to show that everything is possible at KMP Speed Shop!
The next winter we stripped down the car and began the project:
- Repainted engine bay (tricoat)
- Refreshed the jdm 2jz
- Build a custom manifold and 4in exhaust
- Build a custom intake with a custom methanol injection kit
- Adapted a Borg Warner efr9180
- Put gsc s2 cams in it
- Made a complete engine harness with a ms3 standalone
- Put a built r154 paired with a carbon fiber driveshaft
- Fitted a big 4.5in front mount intercooler
And many more details!
First result of Guillaume's Lexus IS300
Car put down a solid 780whp on the stock engine and lasted for almost 2 years until a 1/2 mile raceday where we overreved the engine after a miss shift from 2nd to 3rd gear... results: rod bearing #6 spun and caused a rod knock on the stock 2j.
At that point, Guillaume was already planning to build another 2jz that can handle more power, plans came faster than expected! Few days later, the engine was out of the car and we were back on the build board. Final plan was to try to make a 2jz of 1000whp on pump gas (94) and meth! As far as we know, nobody never acheived these numbers with this type of gas on the notorious supra engine.
So here was the mod list for winter 2019/2020:
- Cnc ported head
- Fully built bloc including pistons rods, billet mains and acl bearings
- Tomei oil pan baffle kit
- Borg Warner efr9280 1.45 ar
- Complete new harness and an Ecumaster emu black
- Tons of new sensors
- Revised fuel system with 3 fuel pumps (1xwalbro 525 and 2xAEM 400)
- Complete T56 magnum F Grannas Racing kit to handle the extra hp
And a few more details..
At this point we were all set, we’ve put everything back in the car and test drove it in the street. The new transmission changed the car completely, it was a game changer. Few weeks went by, covid19 made us put the project on hold but as soon as the shop reopened we strapped the car on our mustang dyno to finalise the break in. The week after we did some power pulls and came out with a solid 883whp on straight 94 octane! We then knew that with meth injection and more boost the 4 digits mark was possible!
Reaching the 1000
It was finally on a beautiful and cold sunday morning of May that we did the finals dyno pulls. We managed to do 1012whp and 744wtq @32psi! We couldn’t be happier, everything was pretty much maxed out at this point. The car felt super strong and the redline oil was crystal clean.
What about now?
In the near future we will probably change the intercooler for a bigger one because the good ol TR1045 was giving us big signs of pressure loss.
All of this car is the perfect representation of what we can build at KMP Speed Shop: Building smarter, stronger and better!
